Credit/Identity Protection Services are not a scam.

Here's a list of some of the comments I read online trying to discredit identity theft protection services and why I believe you shouldn't listen to them.

You can do all this yourself for free!
That $1,000,000 guarantee is not even real!
They only monitor your credit which is only 25% of identity theft!
I don't trust them, they have lawsuits against them all over the place!
I don't want to give them my Social Security Number!

You can do all this yourself for free!

Yes it's true, most of this you can do yourself. But if for a small monthly fee you can have someone else do it, why wouldn't you? Also many identity protection services are now monitoring the black market to make sure your identity is not sold online. What is your time worth, how many hours do you want to spend online "for free" monitoring your information? Better let the professionals take care of it.

That $1,000,000 guarantee is not even real, they only pay for the professional they want to use!

Of course they won't hand over $1,000,000 every time someone's identity is stolen. Can you imaging the horde of scammers trying to get their hands on it. Keep in mind, if they are paying for those professionals to help you get your identity back that means you don't have to, it's free for you! Also don't forget all the time you're saving by not going through the phonebook looking for help.

They only monitor your credit which is only 25% of identity theft!

That's not accurate, most of the top credit protection services offer more by monitoring your public records, driver's license and other area of identity theft.

But for argument sake, I think monitoring your credit is the most important one for your future. If someone use your identity to commit a crime, it's a lot easier to convince the judge than trying to cleanup your credit in time to get that mortgage for that new house you're trying to buy!

And for an extra $10 you can get even more protection with ID WatchDog.

I don't trust them, they have lawsuits all over the place!

Of course they have lawsuits... They have hundreds of thousands of customers, no matter how good the company is, there will always be problems that will arise and people that are not satisfied. Even if the customer satisfaction is at 99.9% it still leaves a couple hundred people. If you look at their Better Business Bureau profile, all the complaints have been handle and resolved.

You can cancel anytime!

I don't want to give them my Social Security Number!

They're not stupid, they don't put your SS Number in all the computers for all their employee to see. It's only in a few key systems and only the people with the proper clearance and security can access it. I'm more afraid of all those government offices and all those city employees loosing or stilling my identity!
